This sweet family wanted to celebrate two milestones in one session—updating their family portraits and documenting their little boy’s first birthday. As soon as they mentioned wanting an outdoor session surrounded by Utah’s fall colors, I knew Snowbasin fall family photos would be the perfect fit.
Every autumn, Snowbasin transforms into one of the most breathtaking locations in Northern Utah. The mountain air turns crisp, the aspens glow with brilliant shades of gold, and the evening light filters through the trees in the most magical way. As the evening went on, the sun played peekaboo behind the clouds. Every time it broke through the aspens, the entire mountain seemed to glow. Those little pockets of golden light are one of the reasons Snowbasin fall family photos have become some of my favorite sessions to photograph each year.
A Beautiful Way to Celebrate a First Birthday
I absolutely love when families combine milestone portraits with family photos. Instead of scheduling separate sessions, this family chose to celebrate their son’s first birthday by ending the evening with a simple outdoor cake smash surrounded by the beauty of the mountains. It felt so much more personal than a traditional studio setup and perfectly reflected this season of their family’s life.
At first, their birthday boy wasn’t quite sure what to think about the cake. He cautiously poked at the frosting and studied it with the serious curiosity that only one-year-olds have. Everyone laughed as he slowly investigated every little detail before finally taking his first taste. Once he realized cake was actually delicious, there was no stopping him.
Before long, frosting covered his tiny hands, and his big sister decided she wanted to join the fun too. She couldn’t resist sneaking a few bites herself, and watching them laugh together made for some of my favorite photographs from the entire evening. These are the moments I hope families remember years from now—not whether every smile was perfect, but how it felt to celebrate together.
My Favorite Moment of the Evening
Out of the entire gallery, one image continues to stand out in my mind. Mom was quietly walking through the golden aspens with her little boy in her arms while the evening light filtered softly through the trees behind them. She wasn’t looking at the camera, she wasn’t worried about posing, she was simply soaking in a quiet moment with her baby.
