Let’s be honest—meeting Santa can go one of two ways.
For some little ones, it’s the most magical day of the year. They run right up to Santa with wide eyes, a big smile, and a carefully rehearsed Christmas wish.
For others…well, Santa is still a stranger with a very impressive beard.
And that’s completely okay.
As both a mom and a photographer, I’ve learned that every child experiences new things differently. Whether your little one is bursting with excitement, feeling a little shy, or needs a few extra minutes to warm up, my goal is to create a relaxed, joyful experience where they can simply be themselves.
Santa Photos in Salt Lake City Utah are about so much more than getting everyone to smile at the camera. They’re about preserving the wonder, anticipation, and magic of childhood exactly as it is.
Here are a few simple ways to help prepare your children for your Utah Santa Photography Experience.

8 Tips to Make the Most Out of Your Utah Santa Experience

1. Start Talking About Santa Ahead of Time
A few days before your session, begin talking about how exciting it will be to meet Santa.
Rather than focusing on sitting perfectly still or giving a big smile, simply let them know they’re going to visit a kind friend who loves hearing about Christmas wishes, favorite cookies, and what they’re most excited for this holiday season.
The more familiar Santa feels beforehand, the more relaxed they’ll be when they meet him.
2. Read Christmas Books Together
One of the easiest ways to prepare young children for Utah Santa Photos is by making Santa feel familiar before they ever arrive.
Read a few Christmas stories together throughout the week leading up to your session. Seeing Santa laughing, delivering presents, and spreading kindness helps children associate him with warmth and joy instead of uncertainty.
A little holiday movie night doesn’t hurt either.
3. Let Them Build the Excitement
Talk about all the fun things they’ll get to do—not just meeting Santa.
At this year’s Utah Santa Photography experience, families will enjoy:
- Hot chocolate
- Fresh cookies
- Holiday activities
- A cozy Christmas atmosphere
- A magical visit with Santa himself
Sometimes knowing there are fun surprises waiting helps children feel excited instead of nervous.

4. Bring Their Favorite Comfort Item
If your child has a favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or small comfort item, don’t hesitate to bring it along.
Sometimes simply having something familiar nearby gives little ones the confidence they need.
If you’d like it included in a few images, I’m always happy to capture that season of childhood. If you’d rather keep it out of the final portraits, we can simply set it aside once they’re feeling comfortable.
There is never any pressure.
5. Practice Saying Hello
You don’t have to rehearse perfect smiles, instead, make it playful.
Pretend you’re Santa and practice saying hello, waving, talking about favorite Christmas cookies, or sharing what they’re hoping for this year. The goal isn’t to perform. It’s simply to help meeting someone new feel familiar.
6. Embrace Every Emotion
Some children will hug Santa immediately. Some will whisper their Christmas list. Some will stay close to Mom. And yes…some may even cry.
Believe it or not, those photos often become parents’ favorites years later. They tell the story of exactly who your child was during this fleeting season of life.
As photographers, we’re often chasing the “perfect” smile, but I believe the most meaningful Utah Santa Photos are the ones that capture genuine emotion. Because that’s what you’ll want to remember someday.
7. Remember—This Is an Experience, Not Just a Photo
One of the biggest differences about my Utah Santa Photography event is that it isn’t designed to feel rushed.
Instead of standing in a crowded mall line, your family will enjoy a thoughtfully curated Christmas experience filled with beautiful details, festive treats, and meaningful moments.
We’ll gently guide your children, follow their lead, and allow the magic to unfold naturally.
Those authentic interactions always create the most treasured images.
8. Keep the Magic Going Afterward
Once your Santa visit is over, don’t let the magic end there.
Stop for a holiday treat, drive around looking at Christmas lights, decorate cookies together, or spend the afternoon watching your favorite Christmas movie as a family.
Your Utah Santa Photos become even more meaningful when they’re part of a day your children will remember for years.

Frequently Asked Questions:
When is the best time to book Utah Santa Photos?
The best time to book Utah Santa Photos is as soon as sessions are released. Santa sessions are only offered once each holiday season and typically sell out quickly. Joining the waitlist is the best way to receive early access before booking opens to the public. This year, in 2026, bookings will go live to the waitlist on September 1!
What if my child is shy or cries?
Every child reacts differently to meeting Santa, and that’s completely okay. Some children jump right into Santa’s lap, while others prefer to observe from Mom or Dad’s arms. Some may even cry.
As a mother and photographer, I never expect children to perform. Some of the most meaningful Utah Santa Photos capture genuine emotion because they preserve exactly who your child was during this stage of life.
We’ll follow your child’s lead and create a relaxed experience with absolutely no pressure.
Are parents allowed in the photos?
Absolutely! While the focus of the Utah Santa Photography experience is on your children, parents are always welcome to step into a few images if the moment naturally calls for it—especially if it helps little ones feel comfortable and secure.
